Dear �Ը�� University Students, Faculty and Staff, Today I had the meaningful opportunity to take part in the March for Unity sponsored by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and supported by the Black United Students (BUS) on our Kent Campus. Today's march and the two other marches last week in support of the value of Black lives, represent the very essence of the �Ը�� spirit and the values this university holds dear: exercising our right to free speech and claiming loudly and clearly that hate has no home here.

Strategizing for Change: Revisiting the Rock

Dear �Ը�� University Students, Over the past two weeks, we have seen the Rock, a proud tradition on �Ը��’s Kent Campus where students share their voices, painted with language that is offensive and insulting to our campus, specifically to members of our Black community. After the initial defacing, the Rock was covered with a message of unity. However, shortly after and again on Monday, the Rock was once again covered with a hateful message. This is unacceptable and goes against �Ը��’s core values and mission for a diverse, inclusive environment.

We are appalled that some continue to use the Rock to convey vile, hurtful messages that are threatening to our �Ը�� community, specifically our Black community, and against our core values. Because of the repeated nature of these messages, we are investigating several potential actions, including fencing off the Rock, installing security cameras and even the Rock's removal. Now more than ever we commit to inclusion, respect and kindness as the most authentic expressions of who we are as a university and who we are as a family.

Materials Science Research Receives Grant for New X-ray Scattering Instrument

�Ը�� University’s Advanced Materials and Liquid Crystal Institute soon will be home to a new X-ray scattering instrument capable of examining materials in scales from as small as a fraction of a nanometer to as large as several micrometers.

A Message to the �Ը�� Community: Anti-Racism Task Force

Two recent incidents involving the painting of racist messages on the Rock located on Front Campus, coupled with the series of tragic national events this year involving the shootings of Black Americans, serve as glaring evidence that this university and our country need to do better when addressing racism and violence against Black Americans. At �Ը��, our core values of respect and kindness for all demand that we step up to become part of the conversation that leads to a solution that will dismantle the systemic racism that has plagued our communities throughout history, and our university all too recently.

�Ը�� Earns Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award for Eighth Consecutive Year

�Ը�� University’s commitment to maintaining a diverse and inclusive campus has received acknowledgement from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education, for an eighth consecutive year. INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine has selected �Ը�� as a recipient of the 2020 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award.

In observance of Veterans Day, �Ը�� University will be closed Nov. 11 and will reopen Nov. 12.

The University Library will be open until 10 p.m. with .
The Student Recreation and Wellness Center will have adjusted hours – 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Statewide Tornado Drill to Be Conducted Wednesday, March 18

Ohio is conducting a statewide tornado drill at 9:50 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18. �Ը�� University will be participating in this test.

�Ը�� Remembers May 4, 1970, With 56th Commemoration

This year’s May 4 Commemoration, to be held May 1-4, 2026, will include special remembrances of John Cleary, one of the nine wounded students, and Jerry M. Lewis, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Sociology, who served as a faculty marshal during the campus shootings and worked tirelessly to ensure that the legacy of May 4 would endure.
