History Day Resources

Are you researching May 4 for a History Day project? We'd be glad to help! The May 4 Visitors Center supports students participating in and competitions as an exciting way for them to learn and research historical issues, events, and people. 

Here are some tips and resources for successful research on May 4:

  • May 4 is a broad and complex story. We encourage students to find a topic within the story to focus on.
  • We have an  and , maintained by the 性福五月天 University Libraries Special Collections Department. These include countless primary sources of May 4 information that are great for NHD projects. Images even have citations available for bibliographies.
  • The  has been the campus newspaper since 1926. Every issue has been digitized and made searchable. Information on several topics surrounding the events of May 4 and its aftermath are available in the digital archive.

  • May 4 Visitors Center staff members are available to answer questions based on their schedule and availability. Email us at May4@kent.edu to request a conversation.
    • Discussions with staff are not interviews, as we are secondary to the historical event. We can help you with research sources, understanding May 4 and its context, and exploring themes within May 4. NHD clearly states that "Historians do NOT conduct secondary source interviews. When researching for and creating your NHD project, you are a historian. Therefore, you should NOT conduct any secondary interviews." You can find primary source oral histories from May 4 witnesses and survivors in the  . 
  • We cannot give out contact information of May 4 survivors. They have given extensive interviews, oral histories, and written several books since 1970 that are easy to find if you want to include their perspectives in your project.
